Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.
So, if I were to invent a new holiday, first off, it must have something wonderful to say, to everyone universally; and I’d name it simply, “Reflection Day!”

Reflection over Sunset Bay Marina, Stuart, Florida
To participate in this commemorative event, one must only be of human decent. One day of the year to pause and reflect. To look back on what we’ve done, where we failed and where we succeeded. Then, to look ahead to where we’re going, and make course correction if needed.
Born from a long heralded quote of Socrates in antiquity, from Plato’s Apology, that the unexamined life is not worth living. Simply meaning that without self-reflection, the pursuit of wisdom and useful critical thinking, our lives will lack purpose and we’ll be too self leaning.
The Biblical word, Selah, to pause and reflect, could also lend weight to this observance’s significance. And to celebrate we, each and every human being, could either give gifts to make amends to others we’ve offend, do something for the community or the world at large or just decide to leave some bad things behind in pursuit of a selfless trend.
There could be endless displays in which people would celebrate this special day… throw lavish parties to invite those who others cast away, donate time and treasure in life altering ways, forgive something before relationships decay, or just quietly allow our hearts to take an honest look at how we’ve behaved and whether or not something should change.
Reflection Day, if ever to come to fruition, would have love of others as its mission and improvement of lives its ambition. As with other holidays in our traditions, Selah Day, is a very bold proposition. It would be a day that should warm our hearts, release harmful inhibitions and help us honestly, without omission, leave behind past weighty baggage and start a new with clearer vision. There isn’t anyone this holiday would leave out, because no one is perfect or without doubt, and all of us could use another reason to rejoice and shout! Shalom and Selah!
